Direction: The Alchemy of Destiny…
Do you go where the wind blows? Is the current of time your predictor for paths taken? Life is but a finite stream of happenings, throwing us here and there, rocking us from cradle to grave. But as our spool of time unwinds, do we dare make those decisions that direct us to our fate? Do we dare strike a bond with that direction in which our alchemy of destiny is to be found?
Direction is the keystone of an existence with meaning. Without it there is no purpose and there can be no destiny. Life becomes a feckless journey of trivial happenings when we saunter not knowing whence we come and whither we go. Aimlessly we pass through time, bored with our surroundings, bored with ourselves. Not knowing what to do, we escape from responsibility and lay prostrate before the anvils of time. The world happens to us, instead of us happening to the world. This is life without direction!
But to lead with direction is the cornerstone of a life well lived. Focused in our pursuit and determined in our stance, we elegantly move forward knowing no bounds and breaking all limits. Proudly we beckon from the crowd and aspire to something more, something original. Creativity and effort are our partners as we forge through uncharted realms of surprise, chance and failure. Not knowing whether victory is ours, we soldier on.
It was American author Herman Melville (1819-1891) who wrote that “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.”
And to this there can be no greater reward than when we do succeed. When the direction we set out upon, for all its trials and tribulations, has arrived, and that impending feeling of achievement and accomplishment rushes over us. Is this not what we live for? Is this not what we struggle for day by day? It’s the triumph of spirit over the debacle of chaos, and it’s at that point, solely at that point, when all that we dreamed of becomes enshrined in the reality of our life. It’s then and there that we’ve never felt so alive, so in the moment, so in the present.
Herein lies the beauty of life. For all the suffering, for all the pain, it’s that reward in which we are in search of that makes for a meaningful existence. Whether or not we achieve it is beside the point. Do we have the wherewithal to go after that which our heart desires? (see Fortitude and the Wherewithal to Carry On…) Do we have the courage to break from the crowd and uniquely follow our own direction or are we forever tied to the chains of what others think and do? Are we free and independent thinking individuals? These are the questions that matter, and if we answer yes, then it’s time to stop the vacillation and start the action (see Vacillation: The Enemy of Action…).
Move forward and the world becomes our oyster. Make a decision, take a stand and a pick a direction; do this and the alchemy of destiny patiently awaits our arrival…
