The Scariest Ghost of All…
Wow! Can you believe it? Halloween is here! It’s that evening when small kids, medium kids and large kids (the latter known as adults) get dressed in wacky, weird and wonderful costumes, and take to the streets to scare demons and go door knocking for tricks or treats.
It seems that each Halloween the discussion revolves around the year’s most popular costumes, and this year is no exception. Apparently, Miley Cyrus and the cast of Duck Dynasty are the big hits. Really?! Miley Cyrus or Duck Dynasty – are you serious? Now there’s a frightful contrast!
As dreadful as those apparitions may be, I dare suggest there’s one that causes even more consternation and fear among the populace. I would even say it’s the scariest ghost of all, and if your misfortune should place you in the presence of such a phantom, then Halloween comes not once a year, but visits upon you daily. Poor soul!
What is this ghost I speak of – this ghost that makes life a nightmare and arrives in all shapes, sizes and silhouettes – sometimes easy to recognize, sometimes not? Some hide like a chameleon, some parade like a peacock, but all have in common: they’re created from the same cloth – a cloth that is shameless and without regard.
Any thoughts, hints or ideas of what I write here? Perhaps a line or two will shed light where darkness still reins.
Gullibility its ally, lying its tactic, and brown-nosing its strategy, it knows no limits or boundaries. It has but one end and one end alone. With or without risk, self-aggrandizement is its ultimate goal.
Getting warmer now? Buried within, is a black void of emptiness. Hollow and cold, its depth knows nothing but envy, jealousy and spite, with empathy an alien concept. Its face is but a mask, a charade with no meaning, and if you’re not careful, its charm and persuasion will suck you in. Oh the horrors this ghost casts!
By now you know, and if you don’t, pay close heed. Surprise – its weapon of choice – coupled with fear, will sting when it hits. Shock sets in, ruled by disbelief. “How could I be taken? How could I be a fool? How could I’ve not seen it?” Others may have and spared no warning.
Ah, but that’s the power of this ghost as it slithers among its prey. No one dare speak up, lest they be bitten. No one dare question, lest they be attacked. For the egomaniac is the scariest ghost of all!
