Take Action and ‘Spring’ Into New Beginnings…
This month officially marked winter’s end and spring’s debut. Although it seems that old man winter has yet to release many of us from his frozen clutches, the spring season of new beginnings is once again upon us. And given that this past winter was one for the record books, what could be more apt than to write a few words about the preciousness of spring, and the rebirth of things to come.
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better,” Albert Einstein (1879-1955) once said. For it’s in nature where life’s secrets are revealed, and there’s nothing more revealing than the passing of one season to another, and there’s nothing more striking than winter passing into spring. Long, cold, dark nights traded for warm, blossoming, fresh days is a miracle in itself. Who would believe in the midst of a bleak winter that such bright days would once again bless our souls? But bless us, they most certainly will.
Just the same is it with our lives. As we journey along life’s path, many things we shall encounter – some good; some not so good. We cannot know happiness without knowing sorrow, and we cannot know sorrow without knowing happiness. One infers the other, just as birth infers death, and winter infers spring. It’s the way of nature; it’s the way of the universe.
It’s at the toughest times that we must bring this to bear. It’s at those times when we ask ourselves, “Is there any light at the end of this tunnel? Are things ever going to get better? When will I ever get through this?” that we must remember, that every dark, cold and desolate winter is followed by a spring buzzing with newborn life.
So the next time we encounter hardship, whether in business, career, health, family or love, it’s up to us to keep things in perspective. It’s critical we stay strong (see Fortitude and the Wherewithal to Carry On…) and demonstrate the belief that sooner or later, things will get better and our ‘spring’ will arrive. Naturally, we can’t stand idly by expecting this to happen of its accord. We must put our head to the grindstone knowing that so long as we give it our best, at some point, good things will happen. To not do this is self-betrayal. To not do this is to give up, and nobody loves a quitter, especially not nature and especially not the universe.
“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn,” wrote famed American author and journalist Hal Borland (1900-1978). We’d do well to remember these words the next time pain and hardship slap us in the face. Instead of turning the other cheek, let’s take action, and ‘spring’ into new beginnings…
