Be Bold and Seize the Moment…

We’ve all been there. A moment in time when the stars align, and present an opportunity that may come but once. The door creaks open, if ever so slightly; and it’s ours, ours to be bold, to push down and go forth with what may lie behind; or it’s ours to ignore, and let the moment fade into oblivion.

These moments are rare, but when they happen, we know it. It’s as if time stands still. It’s as if everything becomes magnified. It’s as if the present becomes surreal, and we somehow recognize fate hanging in the balance attending upon the action we take. Are we bold and seize the moment, or do we settle, and shut the door to new beginnings?

“Freedom lies in being bold,” wrote American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963), and yet so many of us, so many of us who treasure ourselves to be free beings, fear to be bold, fear to venture into the unknown, fear to risk. We are trapped in familiarity. We are prisoners of our own making, not behind walls of concrete and rolls of barbed wire, but behind our own self-limiting beliefs, behind our own fears.

To live a bold life means to keep fear in check. To fear is to be human, but this mustn’t equate to living a life of fear (see Don’t Fear Failure, Let Failure Fear You…). We must garner inner strength and tackle our deep-seated apprehensions, lest we let them rule our lives. We must take action, we must act bold.

Acting bold does not entail recklessness; however it does entail risk. Nothing in life is certain, and it’s that very uncertainty that makes life worth living. Without risk, life would be but one long mundane journey leaving us shriveled on the sands of time. We’d sigh our last breath wondering, “What was that all about?”

On the contrary, leading a bold life brings meaning to our existence. It’s the oomph at daybreak that springs us from bed to take on yet another day. It’s the vitality that drives us toward our goals, in spite of odds stacked against us. It’s the excitement that derives from knowing we gave it our all, even if our all wasn’t good enough. How else would we know, if we didn’t at least try? That is being bold!

Many of us prefer to “play it safe,” whatever that may mean. Our egos can’t stand being bruised, so God forbid we put them out there. Rejection, in all shapes and forms, is anathema to the ego, and if we’re not careful, the ego will be to us, to what the jailer is to the cell block. It will lock us up and hide the key away. We must never let our ego get the better of us.

So dear friends, the clock ticks and we have but one life to live – go forth and be bold, go forth and seize the moment…
