The Only New Year’s Resolution that Matters…

Another year gone and another upon us, and do we remember the resolution we made going into 2014? I would wager a great many of us don’t, and a great many of us prefer not to remember, even if we did. Such are New Year’s resolutions.

Caught in the excitement, we ambitiously resolve to accomplish a vast amount of feats. We’re going to lose that extra weight. We’re going to take that long vacation. We’re going to read that classic book. We’re going to buy that shiny, new car. We’re going to make that career switch. The list is endless, and when February rolls around, most will be forgotten, and added to the dustbin of past resolutions.

But there’s one New Year’s resolution that does matter, and I dare say, it’s the only one that matters. Live this resolution day in, day out, and you’ll never need to make another one, as this one, if acted upon, takes care of all others. Wow! Powerful, eh?! It can be, but that depends on us. Here it is. Are you ready?

Resolve to be a better person.

Yes, that’s it. Simple, isn’t it? I mean what could be easier than that? Resolve to be a better person. After all, isn’t that what we all want? Don’t we all try to live that mantra? One would think, but then look around, and even more so, look in the mirror (see The Worst Kind of Identity Theft). Do we truly make this our code? Did we live this in 2014? Easier said than done, I venture to say.

You may ask what is meant by “better person.” It’s broad; it’s subjective. What it means to one, may mean something different to another. True enough, but deep within, there’s a common bond that weaves through all of humanity. We all want the best for ourselves and our families, and recognizing that others want the same, is the first step to become a better person.

Help others to achieve their goals, and we help ourselves to achieve ours. Arise in the morning, thinking of only what we want, and our lives will be barren. Arise in the morning, thinking what we can do to help others, our lives will be abundant. Sounds idealistic, but it’s not. Many a successful person knows this and those who don’t: beware, for riches procured on the basis of “me” seldom last, if at all. Sooner or later the bell tolls and what goes forth returns, for better or worse.

So this New Year’s, let’s keep it simple. Let’s resolve to be a better person. Help others find their way, and we help ourselves find our own. What makes a better New Year’s resolution than that?

 Happy New Year everyone!
