Goodbye Sunset, Hello Sunrise: The Joy of Moving On…
With or without us, the sun shall set, and the sun shall rise. And with the dawning of each new day, change arrives. As if delivered on golden platter, we awaken arms a stretched, ready to begin a new day, ready to discover the joy of moving on from the day before.
Moving on from what, you may justifiably ask? We all have different reasons for wanting to move on, but there’s a singular thread running through them all. And that’s the joy, the jubilation and liberation that comes from letting go of a past – good or bad – and moving on to a new future.
Often, it’s associated with a bad event, a negative experience with something or someone, but not necessarily. It could be from loss of a loved one, or loss of a home, a career, or a business. There’s a multitude of things that causes us to want to move on, and leave the past in the past, and head for a brighter future. But it isn’t so much about a situation or a person, as it’s about the act of moving on itself.
Moving on effectively requires more than just letting go; it requires perspective (see Perspective, the American West, and the Warsaw Concerto at 30,000 feet…). Perspective is the ability to distinguish the important from the unimportant, and it’s this ability, which affords us the opportunity to properly view situations and people from our past. It’s a conscious effort, and happens not by itself, but once decided upon, it’s powerful. Without it, letting go is nothing more than a hollow wish – an empty chasm.
With perspective, acceptance comes, and acceptance is the foundation of moving on (see Acceptance, Self-Belief, and a Rising Phoenix…). We can’t move on, if we don’t accept situations and people as they are. We may wish them different, but we can’t change them. It’s acceptance that ultimately leads to the jubilation and liberation that derives from moving on. It’s acceptance that truly allows us to let go, and get on with our lives.
How often have we been disappointed that something didn’t go our way, be it in love, career or business? I would submit often. How often have we then looked back, and gave thanks that it didn’t work out as as we would have liked? I would submit often as well.
Life is peculiar, and situations and people have a way of showing up when we least expect them to. And the joy of moving on, is that it awakens our hearts and minds to the myriad of possibilities that surround us each and every day. No longer are we blinded by past malevolence, regret, and disappointment, but rather we harbor gratitude for what has been, and for what will be. We must treasure the past and the lessons learned, but we mustn’t live there. Instead, we must let go, and we must seize the joy of moving on.
