Consistency: The Hallmark of Character…

For better or worse, we are all creatures of habit. It’s in our DNA. They’re a part of our routine and they define us. Show me a person of consistency, in whatever shape or form, and I’ll show you the hallmark of character.

We are what we consistently do or don’t do. Our behavior speaks to our character. Do we hold the door when we see someone coming or do we wantonly disregard the person behind us? Do we indiscriminately flick cigarette butts on the street or do we carefully dispose of them (For the record, the author is a non-smoker and abhors smokers tossing their saliva-maligned cigarette ends wherever they so desire.) Little as these things may appear, they speak volumes to the attitudes of people who consistently carry out such deeds (see Create a New Mindset, Create a New Horizon…). Our actions speak louder than words, no matter how proudly recited.

And yet many neglect the warning signs of negative behavior, and forego the benefits accruing to those living on the positive side of the equation. It was William Shakespeare (1564-1616) who said thatAll the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.” If this be true, then is it not best to play a role consistent to living a positive life?

In this day and age of anything goes, do what you want whenever you want, we would do well to abide that life is more than just a game of random moments about to unfold. Surely there’s a method to the “madness”, and if there’s not, then isn’t it wise to create one? Do we let life control us, or do we charge forward and take control of life? With all of its ups and downs, perhaps it’s not as much a matter of control, as it’s about consistency.

When we ponder the great personalities of past and present times, it doesn’t take long to discern that drifting isn’t a dominant feature of these bold men and women who’ve dared to test new waters (see Be Bold and Seize the Moment…). As much as haphazardness dramatizes its act upon life, it’s consistency that largely determines how events evolve. Do we cave at the first sign of resistance, or do we hold steadfast to our goal?

If you’re like me, then a semblance of order begotten of consistency is a prerequisite to a life with meaning. Order brings structure, and with structure comes a framework from which to lead life. Without order, there is no structure and there is no framework. Without order, one does not lead life, but one follows it!

It’s easy to lose ourselves in the chaos of the world, and to think that our planet has lost all sense of common cause, if such a thing ever existed or could exist. What truly matters is what we bring to bear upon ourselves, and with it, the impact we have upon others. Do we consistently lead a positive life? Are we an example for those around us? If so, then we’ve reached the true hallmark of character.

Let the journey begin…
