Truth: The Elusive Jester…

For those of us entranced with the daily exhortations of the US election, if there’s one thing that’s come home to roost is that the truth never seems to be what it’s made out to be. Like an elusive jester, it laughs in our face just when we think we’ve figured it out. Sides don’t matter, it can shame all.

It’s no different in our daily lives. We are constantly asking ourselves what is and what isn’t? Can we trust someone? Can we afford something? Can we believe in our abilities? The list is never-ending and our yearning to determine the truth never ceases, or at least it shouldn’t.

Italian scientist Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) poignantly stated that “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.”

Herein lay the essence of a free life, namely the ability for us to go out and discover the truth, be it good or bad in the eyes of those receiving it. Unfortunately, Galileo’s experience was anything but. Charged and convicted of heresy in 1633, he was placed under house arrest for the rest of his life. His primary sin: claiming the Earth revolved around the Sun and not the other way around. The truth apparently bothered a lot of people at the time.

Today, thankfully, we live in a free society (at least some of us do) where freedom of speech and opinion is cherished and relished. It’s through free debate and discourse, without fear of retribution and violence, that truth is determined. It’s the give and take of point and counter-point that elevates it to the surface. It’s the freedom to think and express, and not the act to shut down and cast out, that advances civilization.

The day that we as a society become insistent on one set of views without the right to question, is the day we slip into the oblivion that falsehood is. Everyone nods yes when no one knows why. Thought and deduction cease to exist and we as people become puppets controlled by those “knowing better.” God forbid anyone think!

And yet even when the truth is discovered, why do so many people neglect to act upon it? Everyone has their reasons and no one can be sure why people act the way they do, but perhaps fear and comfort are among them. Fear of change that truth can wrought, and comfort in staying the same, even if it bespeaks otherwise. It’s not easy being an anomaly when you think the world revolves one way, and everyone else fervently thinks otherwise. Just ask Galileo.

If we are to remain a free and thinking society, then it’s incumbent upon us to foster and maintain an environment conducive to a variety of opinions, whether one agrees with them or not. When we’ve reached a point where some feel entitled (see Entitlement: The True Meaning Uncovered…) to voice an opinion, but not obliged to allow others to voice theirs, then we’ve reached a point where only falsehood can prevail and truth eventually fades.

But make no mistake, the truth always remains the truth, and it’s only a matter of time before that elusive jester comes around to have the last laugh on us…
