Choice: A Key Ingredient of Life…

The first month of 2019 has almost passed and we’re well into another year of our lives. As each year seemingly flashes by quicker than the previous, it leaves one pondering where time has gone? Did we do everything we intended to do and accomplish those New Year’s resolutions from last year? Did our choices bring us nearer our life’s aspirations? And therein lies embedded a key ingredient to life, namely choice.

Assuming a free society, we have choice, for without it, true freedom cannot exist. Are you free to pick up and move? Yes. Are you free to quit your job and find an alternative? Yes. Are you free to start or end a relationship? Yes. Are you free to speak your mind? Yes. All these and more are fundamental to leading a free existence, without which we would all suffer in misery knowing that we’re forever chained to unbearable circumstances. Our choices are only limited in as far as they don’t infringe upon another’s ability to live their life.

Now this doesn’t mean that any of the above, nor the multitude of choices that cross are path, are always easy. Some may be, but many of life’s key choices fathom great change that bring much pain and disruption, especially in the short term. However if comfort is the lazy man’s servitude, then change is the aspiring man’s freedom (see The Road to Sacramento, the Road to Change…). Without choice, we can never effect the change required to lead the lives we desire to live.

When we give up choice or delegate it to someone else, be it a spouse, employer and/or government, we ultimately abdicate our ability to make decisions for ourselves. In other words, we let others choose what others deem “best for us.” With each choice taken from us, we become that much less responsible for the outcome of our lives. We become dependent upon others for our happiness, which is the worst recipe should we wish for a fulfilling life.

Choice is the stuff that brings us alive. British author George Eliot (1819-1880) stated that “The strongest principle of growth lies in the human choice.” Take choice out of the equation and life becomes bland, mundane and tedious. Void of meaning, life becomes one never-ending grey sky. We would never realize our full potential as humans and our God-given gifts would lie dormant within us. Talent would be meaningless and effort inconsequential. Why bother when others decide everything for us?

Having choice entails independent thought and action. It means taking responsibility for our actions and not laying blame elsewhere. We become masters of our own destiny and with it people of action. We exist to live as opposed to live to exist, as we squeeze every drop of life out of the limited time allotted us. Time is of the essence; we know it and it makes us appreciate life!

So as we traverse 2019, remember that it’s a gift to have choice. It’s nothing to fear, but everything to embrace and cherish. It’s a key ingredient of life, at least any life worth living…
